Sabriel is a book that has taken permanent residence on my bookshelf because it’s an amazing read.
I read it a few years ago, and now that I’ve added the next book in the series to my collection, I had to reread it to refresh my memory.
Sabriel is the first book in The Old Kingdom series, followed by Lirael.

Plot:
Sabriel has been in a boarding school since she was a young girl, and has had little experience with the power of Free Magic, or the Dead – who refuse to stay dead in the old Kingdom. When her father, Abhorsen, goes missing, she has no choice but to enter the Old Kingdom to find him.
Thoughts:
Sabriel is a likeable character right from the beginning. I loved the idea of the heroine discovering what she is capable of. Her character is strong and intriguing.
She has a cloud of expectations hanging over her and her journey of escaping from under her father’s shadow is amazing character growth throughout the book.
The magic was interesting and it was cleverly built into every aspect of the story. The consequences of misusing magic was a good twist to the book and an eye opener about responsibility.
A big thumbs up for world-building that was unique and left a need to know more about it.
The horror elements were brilliantly entwined with the fantasy elements, and while I’m not a huge fan of zombie books, this was well-written.

Overview:
There is a mix of strong themes in the book of family and legacy.
I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
My Rating:
The book has a rating of 4.15 on GoodReads. I gave it a 5.
