The Reptile Room by Lemony Snicket || Book Review

The misfortune continues!

This is book two in the A Series of Unfortunate Events series by Lemony Snicket, and I’m really enjoying the quick and easy reads.

The books are suitable for both kids and adults, and ever serve as a good palate cleanser between more serious books.

Plot: from GoodReads:

Dear Reader,

If you have picked up this book with the hope of finding a simple and cheery tale, I’m afraid you have picked up the wrong book altogether. The story may seem cheery at first, when the Baudelaire children spend time in the company of some interesting reptiles and a giddy uncle, but don’t be fooled. If you know anything at all about the unlucky Baudelaire children, you already know that even pleasant events lead down the same road to misery.

In fact, within the pages you now hold in your hands, the three siblings endure a car accident, a terrible odour, a deadly serpent, a long knife, a large brass reading lamp, and the appearance of a person they’d hoped never to see again.

I am bound to record these tragic events, but you are free to put this book back on the shelf and seek something lighter.

With all due respect,
Lemony Snicket

Thoughts:

Sticking to the same easy-flowing writing style, the book was quick to read and enjoy in one sitting.

I really enjoyed reading about Uncle Monty and his peculiar profession, and his fascinating home setup.

You kind of know already things are going to go south for the children again, and the author keeps a good pace with divulging the information at the right time. Yet no matter how hard things get, the children stick together and don’t easily give up.

There’s a (sort of) new character introduced and when you get some clues about them, you know things are about to get interesting!

I’ve picked up on a main theme that is in this book, and was in the previous one, and suspect it will continue – adults aren’t always competent to see and do the right thing, and sometimes children need to fend for themselves to get things done.

Overview:

Overall, another fun read from the series with new adventures and dictionary extracts to educate you.

My Rating:

The book has a rating of 3.99 on GoodReads. I gave it a 5.
