I hadn’t heard of Anne Tyler before and being a short read, I thought I’d give this book a chance.
I’m a gambler when it comes to choosing books and sometimes you win, and other times you wish you’d known before the time you’ll maybe end up wasting your time.

Crippled in his right arm and leg, Aaron spent his childhood fending off a sister who wants to manage him. So when he meets Dorothy, a plain, outspoken, self-dependent young woman, she is like a breath of fresh air. Unhesitatingly he marries her, and they have a relatively happy, unremarkable marriage. But when a tree crashes into their house and Dorothy is killed, Aaron feels as though he has been erased forever. Only Dorothy’s unexpected appearances from the dead help him to live in the moment and to find some peace.
Gradually he discovers, as he works in the family’s vanity-publishing business, turning out titles that presume to guide beginners through the trials of life, that maybe for this beginner there is a way of saying goodbye.
The book deals with grief and loss but it felt like the story was just going through the motions from the beginning to the end. There was some emotional build up as the story went along but it wasn’t as prominent to leave a feeling of sorrow or empathy for Aaron.
It’s basically a compilation of all of Aaron’s thoughts, hopes, doubts and in the end I was left feeling sorry for Dorothy – that she had to put up with such a man. He was a jerk, plain and simple, and getting to know his character more, I struggled to find any emotional movement towards him.
The ending was predictable. You could see it coming before the characters even knew there was a chance for that.
Not a great reading choice, not an author I’d be interested in reviewing again in the future.
The book has a rating of 3.62 on GoodReads. I gave it a 3.
